Nikkei 225 underperformed the region in early trade, with carmakers leading the fall. Suzuki Motor shed 0.2 percent after reporting a 4.4 percent decline in operating profit for the year ended March late Monday.
Bigger rivals Toyota Motor and Nissan inched down 0.3 percent each, while Honda drifted 0.4 percent higher after opening briefly in the red.
