MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares
outside Japan was up 0.7 percent. Japan's Nikkei added 0.5 percent after
plunging 3.7 percent in the previous session to a 14-1/2 month closing low.
On Wall Street, major indexes finished with
declines of more than 1 percent, though they were well off lows of more than 3
percent.
US crude for February
delivery, which expired at the end of the day, slid 6.7 percent to settle at
USD 26.55. New front-month March futures CLc1 fell nearly 4 percent on the day
to close at USD 28.35 a barrel, but were up 1.3 percent in early Asian trade at
